PhD position in Quantum Information Theory and Computing at TU Darmstadt, Germany

Application deadline:

Thursday, July 31, 2025

Job type:

We are looking for a doctoral researcher for the Quantum Computing Group of Prof. Mariami Gachechiladze at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. The position starts on 01.09.2025 (later dates are also negotiable) and is in the scope of the newly received DFG funding in collaboration with the group of Prof. Tommaso Calarco and Prof. Felix Motzoi at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The project is called “Fully Classical and Efficient Autonomous Calibration of Quantum Computers” and is part of the upcoming priority program 2514 on Quantum Software, Algorithms and Systems. Read more about the program here: https://www.spp2514.kit.edu/english/index.php

A successful candidate is expected to work on interdisciplinary projects within quantum computing and quantum information processing to develop new benchmarking and verification techniques for quantum optimal control. We are a broadly interested theoretical research group, working on topics including:

  • Foundational questions in quantum mechanics (e.g., Bell’s theorem)
  • Certification of quantum computation
  • Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms
  • Multipartite entanglement theory and quantum networks
  • Classical and quantum causal models

We provide a generous salary based on the German TV-L E13 pay scale. Appointments will be for three years at 100% E13. Since the research group is still young (with five doctoral students and two postdoctoral researchers), its members receive optimal supervision and ample discussion time.

Qualification Requirements for a PhD position: While our group is affiliated with the computer science department, we welcome applications from students with backgrounds in mathematics or physics. Candidates must hold an MSc degree in one of the listed degrees at the time of hire. Candidates with high mathematical rigor and programming experience are especially encouraged to apply.

To apply for a PhD position, candidates should send a CV (including Bachelor and Master transcripts and the electronic contact details of two potential referees) and a short research statement to tuda.qc@gmail.com with the subject: PhD application. The application deadline is July 31, 2025. Later applications may be considered.

The position is limited to three years. The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply.
