The third meeting of the COST Action MP1209 “Thermodynamics at the quantum scale” will be held in Belfast, organised by the Quantum Technology group at Queen’s University Belfast. The meeting will address the blossoming field of quantum thermodynamics, focusing on the themes addressed by the three working groups of the Action:
WG1: Equilibration, thermalisation & emergence of canonical states
WG2: Thermodynamic and information theoretic relations for general quantum systems
WG3: Implementations, from classical to quantum thermodynamic experiments
The project is to carry out research on the interaction of light with cold atomic gases. One focus will be on the study of the emergence of correlations in the ground state and excited states of this many-body system and its use as quantum simulator for field-theoretical models.

Post-doctoral Fellowship
The Physics of Information Group, at Instituto de Telecomunicacoes (in Lisbon, Portugal), is seeking to hire one Post-doctoral Fellow to develop research in one of the following areas: quantum information theory, quantum effects in biology or quantum thermodynamics.
The candidates are expected to have a doctoral degree and research experience in one of the above areas, or in general in: open quantum systems, quantum optics, condensed matter physics, solid state/graphene physics, biophysics, or information processing in biological systems.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES
Department of Physics and Advanced Technology Institute
Research Fellow in Theory of Control and Quantum State Measurement in Superconducting Circuits
Salary: £29,837 to £32,590
Closing Date: Wednesday 16 July 2014

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position starting on 1 September 2014 (or soon thereafter if a later start is required by the successful applicant) to build a quantum mechanical model for non-classical state generation, propagation and measurement
The project is to carry out research on the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of many-body quantum system, for example cold atomic gases. One focus will be on the study of the emergence of correlated states and collective phenomena in the presence of dissipation and/or coherent driving and – if possible – their potential use for applications, e.g. quantum information processing.

The use of entropy in quantum physics has guided remarkable advances in the understanding of entanglement and general forms of quantum correlations in composite quantum systems, and has enabled the quantification of quantum advantages in information and communication technologies. Entropic measures are at the core of quantum information theory, and recent cross-fertilizations with other fields (such as condensed matter and thermodynamics) are further promoting the interpretation and application of entropy in the quantum domain.

The Light-Matter Interactions Unit (groups.oist.jp/light) in OIST, headed by Prof Síle Nic Chormaic, invites applications for a postdoctoral position. The focus will be on developing and implementing novel trapping techniques for laser-cooled atoms based on nano- and micro-optics, with emphasis on nanostructured optical nanofibers. Such systems have potential for quantum engineering using neutral atoms. The successful candidate must have previous experience in laser-cooling of alkalis or ion trapping and must have prior, peer-reviewed publications in this field.
