For our newly formed theory division located in Toronto, Canada, we are seeking an excellent research scientist to work on various theoretical aspects of quantum computer design and development. This involves, but is not limited to, development of new photonic-based quantum computing architectures, implementation of quantum algorithms to be compatible with the ORCA photonic design and development of tailored fault-tolerant error correcting codes. An important milestone on the way to the photonic fault-tolerant universal quantum computer is a noisy near-term device with limited fault tolerance capabilities. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to its development in close collaboration with the ORCA quantum hardware group.

We anticipate 2-year postdoctoral appointments, with the possibility of a 3rd year, contingent on performance and funding. These appointments may begin as early as September 2017. Newly established Quantum Technologies Laboratory at the Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw, Poland led by Professor Konrad Banaszek seeks to fill five junior research positions (Postdoc, PhD scholarships, student scholarchips) supported by the project Quantum Optical Communication Systems starting on 1 December 2016.

One of the remaining puzzles in modern physics is the transition from quantum to classical physics. While many models, like decoherence, have been proposed, experimental tests remain very challenging. One of the most promising avenues for observing quantum effects at a macroscopic scale has been through optomechanics in which the radiation pressure of light is used to probe and control the dynamics of mechanical oscillators.

Our goal in the Centre for Quantum Photonics is to explore fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics, as well as work towards future photonic quantum technologies by generating, manipulating and measuring single photons as well as the quantum systems that emit these photons, with a focus on scalable integrated optics devices.

Lead by Prof. Jeremy O'Brien, the Centre spans the School of Physics, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information, at the University of Bristol, UK.
