Postdoctoral Scholar in Quantum Technology ¿ Micro/Nanofabricated Quantum Circuits
The Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (IQST) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Quantum Technology, with a focus on micro- and nanofabricated quantum circuits, ranging from integrated photonic systems to superconducting devices.
This position is affiliated with the Integrated Hybrid Quantum Circuits group (https://quantumcir.com), which provides access to state-of-the-art quantum device fabrication and measurement facilities at the University of Calgary. The group is engaged in cutting-edge research at the interface of quantum optics, superconducting circuits, and hybrid quantum systems, with strong collaborative ties to national labs and industry partners.
Job Description: The successful candidate will contribute to the development, fabrication, and experimental characterization of next-generation quantum circuits. These include superconducting microwave devices, hybrid quantum interfaces, and photonic structures for quantum communication, sensing, and computation.
Key responsibilities:
Design and fabrication of superconducting and photonic quantum circuits using state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities. Cryogenic measurement and characterization of quantum devices (millikelvin and low-temperature setups). Data analysis and theoretical modeling of quantum device performance. Mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. Preparation of manuscripts and presentations for high-impact journals and conferences. Regular progress reporting for internal and external stakeholders. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year (or more) based on performance and funding availability.
Qualifications: Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with demonstrated expertise in experimental quantum science or engineering. A strong interest in interdisciplinary research and innovation should be clearly expressed in the application.
Required qualifications:
Experience with micro/nanofabrication techniques (e.g., electron-beam lithography, deposition, etching). Hands-on expertise in cryogenic measurements and quantum device characterization. Background in superconducting circuits, cavity QED, or integrated photonics. Strong data acquisition and analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar). Excellent communication skills and ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Effective time management and the ability to meet multiple deadlines. Preferred qualifications:
Experience in cleanroom operation and process development. Knowledge of electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., HFSS, COMSOL). Familiarity with quantum-limited amplifiers or microwave-to-optical transducers. Interested candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, and contact information for at least two references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
Application details:
Please email your application as a single .pdf document on or before June 29, 2025 at 11:59 PM MDT to Prof. Shabir Barzanjeh via email shabir.barzanjeh@ucalgary.ca
All applications must include:
a cover letter including date of availability, suitability and motivation for the role, including a brief summary of past, current and future research interests and accomplishments a current curriculum vitae (CV); official or unofficial copy of diploma(s)/university certificate(s); a copy of two recent, peer-reviewed journal/chapter publications or conference presentations, and; the name and contact information including email addresses for at least two (2) referees who have knowledge of your research and academic experience.
